Loose, translucent textiles form the foundation for Chan Seth’s large, un-stretched canvases. Seth grew up in the cosmopolitan city of Dubai, where converging nationalities, religions, and ideologies led to a growing interest in pluralism. Malinese Bògòlanfini, Indian Khadi, and Cambodian Ikats are textiles that have all influenced the artists’s aesthetic vision. As a third generation-artist, Seth received his Bachelor’s in Fine Arts from Cornell University, and proceeded to operate Sandscapes (www.sandscapes.org), an annual arts and music festival in Dubai.

Chan finds solace in the evanescence of the natural world. In his eyes, a fleeting sunset, a passing flock of birds, or a brief daydream are all vital sources of inspiration to depict the impermanence of the world. His pieces remain in delicate balance between experiential and historical. Although informed by extensive ethnographic research, the artist ultimately privileges the viewer’s experience. To that end, he is inspired by Helen Frankenthaler and Mark Rothko to produce abstract fields of color unto which tumultuous dramas or peaceful serenades can unfold.
